What the Pharisees and Sadducees Teach Us About Misusing Scripture — Then and Now

When Religion Becomes Control

Who Did Jesus Actually Rebuke?

One of the most surprising truths in the Gospels is this:

The harshest words Jesus ever spoke were not directed at sinners.

Not the broken.

Not the struggling.

Not women.

Not outsiders.

His strongest rebukes were aimed at religious leaders.

The very people who quoted Scripture most.

The very people who claimed to “defend biblical order".

The very people who believed they represented God.

That should make every church leader — and every husband — pause. Because whenever Scripture is used to control rather than love, something has gone terribly wrong.

The People Jesus Confronted Most

Jesus consistently confronted the Pharisees and the Sadducees. These were not pagans. They were not immoral people. They were the most “religious” people in society.

They knew the Law.

They memorized Scripture.

They taught others how to live.

Yet Jesus opposed them more than anyone else.

Why?

Because they used God’s Word not to heal, restore, or redeem people, but to manage, silence, and control them.

Instead of lifting burdens, they added more.

Instead of opening the door to God, they guarded it

Instead of setting people free, they tightened their grip.

Religion became a tool of power rather than a path to freedom. And that is exactly what Jesus Christ came to overthrow.

Who Were the Pharisees?

The Pharisees were strict legalists and experts in religious law. They looked holy on the outside but missed the heart of God.

Jesus said:

“They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.” (Matthew 23:4)

They:

• Added rules God never commanded

• Focused on outward performance

• Policed behavior• Elevated themselves above others

• Measured spirituality by compliance

They made faith heavy instead of life-giving. They replaced relationship with rules.

Who Were the Sadducees?

The Sadducees were religious elites tied to political power and social status. They controlled the temple system and protected their authority. Their focus was not transformation. It was control. They cared more about influence and position than truth.

So while the Pharisees controlled through legalism, the Sadducees controlled through power. Different methods. Same spirit.

Why Was Jesus So Direct With Them?

Notice something important: Jesus was gentle with the hurting, the broken, and the vulnerable. But when it came to religious controllers, He did not soften His words. He confronted their hypocrisy, exposed their false teachings, and rebuked their legalism—because they loved the law more than they loved people.

He said:

• “Woe to you, hypocrites!”

• “Blind guides"

• “You shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces.”

• “You seek human honor” — craving titles and recognition

• “You load people with burdens they cannot carry.”

• “You are whitewashed tombs… everything inside is unclean.”

• “You brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?”

These were not careless words. They were intentional warnings.

Jesus was not merely correcting theology—He was exposing a system that oppressed people while claiming to represent God. He warned His disciples about their teachings because they distorted the heart of God and neglected justice.

Why such strong language?

Because nothing misrepresents God more than using His name to dominate others.

They did not simply misunderstand Scripture.

They weaponized it.

They used God to justify superiority

They used religion to silence people.

They turned faith into fear.

And control is the opposite of love.

The Spirit of the Pharisees Still Exists Today

This spirit did not disappear in the first century. It simply changed clothing.

Today it often shows up dressed in Christian language:

• legalism

• spiritual intimidation

• hierarchy

• authoritarian leadership

• male superiority teaching

• “biblical authority” used to demand control

Especially inside marriage.

When Complementarianism Mirrors the Pharisees

Many husbands and churches say things like:

• “The husband has the final say".

• “Wives must submit without question.”

• “Men lead, women follow".

• “Her role is support only.”

• “Women shouldn’t teach or lead.”

These statements sound spiritual. But look closer. They are not fruits of the Spirit.

They are control mechanisms. And they mirror the Pharisees more than Christ.

The Parallels Are Striking

Pharisees:

• Added rules God never commanded

• Placed heavy burdens on others

• Loved titles and authority

• Silenced voices• Demanded outward compliance

• Lacked mercy

Modern religious control:

• Add “gender roles” Scripture never assigns

• Dump domestic and emotional labor on wives

• Demand “headship” and final say

• Limit women’s voices and callings

• Require obedience instead of partnership

• Justify control as “biblical leadership”

It is the same spirit. Just baptized in church vocabulary.

Jesus Never Led This Way

Jesus never:

•         Forced obedience

•         Demanded control

•         Silenced or limited women

•         Claimed superiority

•         Used “Scripture” to diminish and abuse women

•         Demanded the last say

•         Treated others as inferior

Instead, He:

• Served

• Listened

• Honored

• Empowered

• Washed feet

• Lifted others up

Jesus did not diminish His bride—He empowered her. He shared His authority with her, entrusted her with spiritual gifts to fulfill every calling, and filled her with His Spirit. He commissioned her to go and make disciples, honored her publicly, and lifted her from the margins into purpose. He sanctified her, making her holy; He made her glorious and victorious. And in the ultimate act of love, He did not demand her sacrifice—He became the sacrifice, laying down His life in her place.

He said:

“The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them… Not so with you.” (Matthew 20:25–26)

Not so with you!

Control is worldly.

Domination is worldly.

Hierarchy is worldly.

That is not Kingdom leadership.

The Pharisee Spirit at Home

When a husband:

• quotes verses to end discussions

• uses “submission” to silence his wife

• claims spiritual authority over her

• makes unilateral decisions

• limits her callings or leadership

• assumes superiority because of gender

He is not modeling Christ. He is modeling religious control. He is acting more like the Pharisees than Jesus. Because love never needs domination. Truth and self-confidence does not fear partnership. And Kingdom leadership does not require superiority.

God’s Original Design Was Partnership

From the beginning:

“Male and female He created them… and gave them dominion.” (Genesis 1:27–28)

Not him. Not her. Them. Together.

Co-laborers.

Co-leaders

Co-heirs.

Leadership in God’s Kingdom is based on:

• character

• humility

• wisdom

• spiritual maturity

• fruit of the Spirit

• servanthood

Not biology. Not gender. Not position. Not titles.

“Only one can lead” is a business worldly model. Not a Kingdom model.

A Sobering Question

If Jesus walked into many homes today… Would He correct the wife? Or confront the husband using misinterpretations of Scripture to control? Would He defend the one being silenced? Or the one demanding the final say? The Gospels already show us the answer.

Jesus always stood with the oppressed and confronted religious controllers - Every time.

Final Reflection

The Pharisees believed they were defending God, but they were resisting Him.

Today we must ask ourselves: Are we reflecting Christ… or the very people He rebuked?

Because whenever Scripture is used to:

• demean

• silence

• exclude

• limit

• burden

• control

…it is no longer the heart of Jesus. It is religion without love. And Jesus consistently opposed that spirit.

The Kingdom Way

The Kingdom of God looks like:

• mutual honor

• shared leadership

• servanthood

• collaboration

• freedom

• empowerment

• love

Not fear.

Not hierarchy

Not domination.

Not “only one can lead.”

Not “only women submit”

Christ is the only Head. The rest of us are family - One Body and nothing misrepresents God more than using His name to dominate others.
